Turkey's minimum wage trend: approaching average employee salaries

Turkey: Minimum wage nearing average employee salaries

In Turkey, the minimum wage is gradually becoming the average wage. This means that the rate of workers earning close to the minimum wage is gradually increasing. In Turkey, 6 out of 10 workers work 20 percent below the minimum wage. This rate was around 4 in 10 people 20 years ago.

The months when the minimum wage exceeds the hunger line are very limited. This shows that a significant portion of workers live below the hunger line. Millions of workers have their eyes on the minimum wage to be announced for 2024. There are also discussions that the minimum wage may be increased once in 2024. The "Minimum Wage Research 2024" report prepared by the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (DİSK-AR) shows how the minimum wage is gradually becoming the average wage. What does this mean? It means that the rate of workers earning close to the minimum wage is gradually increasing. While this is happening, it means that the proportion of people earning more than the minimum wage is also decreasing.

Accordingly, while the rate of workers earning less than the minimum wage was 24.4 percent in 2002, when the AK Party came to power, this rate increased to 33.8 percent in 2022.  The rate of those receiving 5 percent more than or below the minimum wage increased from 27.8 percent to 37.5 percent in the same period.  The rate of those receiving 10 percent more than or less than the minimum wage also increased from 30.7 percent to 38.4 percent.
